Capital Campaign
The ocean is more than a frontier—it’s our future.
And it holds answers only science can unlock. At WHOI, we advance the frontiers of knowledge and accelerate the search for solutions to sustain our ocean world.

Our Impact Goals

Drive breakthrough ocean science and technology
Throughout human history, the ocean has inspired wonder and sparked imagination. The drive to explore and understand the ocean’s mysteries has spurred innovation and discovery, aiding humanity and transforming societies for the better. Today, ocean science and technology offer unprecedented opportunities to address some of our generation’s most pressing problems—from hunger to intensifying storms to energy security.

Protect ocean ecosystems and wildlife
The ocean supports a remarkable abundance and diversity of life. From the tiniest plankton to the largest whale, life in the ocean forms complex food webs, feeds our families, and helps control global climate. Yet through our activities, we are putting ocean life at risk. Today, we are leveraging ocean science and technology to develop solutions that protect wildlife and restore ecosystems, helping to sustain our living ocean now and for the future.

Confront pollution and climate impacts
The ocean is under threat. Pollution and a changing climate are disrupting ocean ecosystems and driving precious species to extinction. Today, ocean science and technology are creating new and better ways to reduce human impacts on the marine environment—and unlock the potential of ocean-based climate solutions while guarding against their unintended consequences.

Open new possibilities for human lives and livelihoods
With a rapidly changing climate and global population expected to exceed 10 billion this century, we face a critical need for new and renewable sources of water, food, energy, and jobs. Today, ocean science and technology are leading the way to ensure food and energy security, boost the blue economy, and
sustainably meet humanity’s growing needs.

TESTIMONIALS
VOICES OF IMPACT
I drove through Woods Hole my whole life without ever knowing what they did here, but it’s a national treasure, and everyone should know what they do.
Over the past five years, I’ve been on a journey to find an organization that could move the needle on climate change. WHOI has proved to be the best stop on this journey.
My family and I are proud to support WHOI's important work with a gift in our wills.
Every one of us relies heavily on the ocean for so much. I'm proud to help lead and support WHOI's amazing scientists and engineers as they strive to explore and learn more.
The quest for knowledge is something Neil and I both value very deeply, which is why I added this important organization to my estate plans. I encourage others to take a similar step to foster future discovery at WHOI.
Global warming is the issue we think will have the greatest impact on our children and grandchildren, so we are acting now, by supporting WHOI on an annual basis.
WHOI provides an opportunity to put my money where my mouth is in terms of supporting and caring about the world's oceans, which is absolutely necessary at this time. I think everybody should be doing it.
Protecting the ocean
starts here.
Together, we can accelerate the search for solutions and expand the frontiers of scientific discovery—for our Ocean Planet.
