A Pacific white-sided dolphin swims alongside the research vessel Atlantis during an October 2006 cruise off the Oregon coast. Pacific white-sided dolphins and their Atlantic counterparts are known as avid bow-riders and acrobatic jumpers. Able seaman on the ship Lance Wills, who snapped this photo, said a school of about 200 dolphins swam with the ship for a half-hour, moving through the water like torpedoes.(Photo by Lance Wills, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
