Researchers Jeff Pietro and Amy Kukulya haul a REMUS 100 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) back to camp on the banks of a fjord in Greenland in July 2012. They were part of a study, led by physical oceanographer Fiamma Straneo and glaciologist Sarah Das and and funded through the Arctic Research Initiative, to investigate seasonal ice melt below Greenland’s massive glaciers. Glacial meltwater provides a significant source of freshwater, chemicals, nutrients and sediment to the surrounding oceans, and observations at the ocean-ice interface will allow researchers to better understand the magnitude and variability of these fluxes.
