Tailgating on the beach? Surfers awaiting the perfect wave? It was a little bit of both for students taking a Field Methods and Coastal Oceanography course, offered through WHOI’s Academic Program Office for the first time in 2014. Following a week of classroom instruction, students headed to a beach on the south side of Martha’s Vineyard for three days of hands-on fieldwork. They studied swash zone dynamics and sediment transport with WHOI scientists Britt Raubenheimer, Steve Elgar, and Peter Traykovski, while other students went offshore aboard the R/V Tioga or to the Connecticut River estuary.(Photo by Daniel Cojanu, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
