One Last Line

March 18, 2016

WHOI port engineer Dutch Wegman unmoors the final line on March 15 as R/V Knorr prepared to set sail from Woods Hole for the last time with a crowd of well-wishers to see it off. Now known as the Rio Tecolutla, the ship was decomissioned by the U.S. Navy in December 2014 and was recently transferred to the Mexican Navy. After nearly 45 years and more than 1.3 million miles in the service of ocean science, the ship will continue its career doing seafloor surveys and other oceanographic work in the Pacific based out of Manzanillo.(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
