Reaching New Heights

Mooring technician Meghan Donohue says that when she chose a job that few women do, she knew there would be challenges. But she wanted a career working with scientists at sea, handling a ship’s rigging and equipment. In 2014, Donohue joined WHOI’s Mooring Operations and Engineering Group—the first woman to do so. Here, on the deck of the R/V Atlantis in the Argentine Basin, Donohue perches atop a scientific mooring’s large surface buoy, preparing to connect it to a crane that will hoist it into the water.
