Woods Hole, MA – Looking for a fun, free, interactive way to learn more about the mysteries of the ocean? You can, this summer in and around Massachusetts! Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), in partnership with the Yawkey Foundation, proudly present the 2024 Ocean and Climate Outreach Series.
The 2024 Ocean and Climate Outreach Series, now in its third year, brings together scientists, policymakers, and the general public to engage in discussions, presentations, and interactive activities focused on the impacts of climate change on our oceans. The events aim to foster dialogue, educate attendees, and inspire collective action to address these pressing environmental challenges.

Science Communication in a Crisis with Dr. Christopher Reddy
When: Thursday, June 27, 2024, 5:30-7:30pm EST. Book presentation begins at 5:30pm followed by a reception and book signing at 6:30 pm.

A new book by Christopher Reddy, marine chemist at WHOI, identifies the principal challenges that scientists face during an environmental disaster when communicating with different stakeholder groups, and offers advice on how to navigate the maze of competing interests and deliver actionable science when the clock is ticking. Science Communication in a Crisis: An Insider's Guide (Routledge; May 10, 2023), draws on Reddy’s decades of experience and offers his hard-won advice from the front lines of environmental disasters.
Join us for a conversation with Dr. Reddy on techniques being developed and implemented by and for experts to deliver trustworthy and actionable information when it matters.

Jaws on the Lawn

When a shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Cape Cod, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.
Please join us with a blanket, picnic, and lawn chairs for a screening of this Cape Cod summer classic film, co-hosted by WHOI, Yawkey Foundation, and the Woods Hole Film Festival
Movie starts at dusk. There will be popcorn, trivia, and prizes!

Changing tides: Exploring the impacts of climate change on people and coastal ecosystems
When: Thursday, July 25, 2024, 5:30–7:30pm EST. Presentation begins at 5:30pm, followed by a reception at 6:30pm.

Our panelists will discuss the latest research and observations on how sea level rise and changing weather patterns are transforming vital coastal environments and the life that inhabits them. Learn about the specific challenges faced by local wildlife, the shifting dynamics of coastal habitats, infrastructure challenges, and the innovative conservation strategies being implemented to protect these areas. Engage in a dialogue about the future of our coastal ecosystems and discover how communities and scientists are working together to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
