New Chief

Monica Hill relaxes for a moment before R/V Atlantis pulls away from the WHOI dock on May 25, on what would be Hill’s first cruise as Chief Engineer. The ship was heading through the Panama Canal to the U.S. West Coast, where it would embark on research missions as well as at-sea testing of the rebuilt HOV Alvin. Her promotion from First Engineer to Chief involved shifting from handling day-to-day operations to administrative duties, Hill said. “There were a lot more hours at a computer and very few hours with a wrench.”
