Jerome Wiesner, then-president of MIT, presided at the 1980 commencement ceremony, held near the WHOI pier in Woods Hole, for graduate students in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering. Wiesner was among the academic leaders that created this unique partnership between two independent institutions 50 years ago. The MIT-WHOI Joint Program has long been considered one of the world’s best graduate programs in oceanography. In 2016, it awarded its 1000th degree. On Saturday, 100 or so alumnae/i will return to Woods Hole for a 50th anniversary celebration, which will include presentations by current students, lab tours, and tours of the research vessel Atlantis.
