The deep submersible Alvin turns 50 this year! Alvin was commissioned on June 5, 1964, beginning a new age of ocean exploration for thousands of researchers. The sub has logged more than 33,000 hours underwater, making countless discoveries that have changed the way we view Earth and the ocean. WHOI biologist Tim Shank and colleagues view live video of the seafloor during the final dive of hybrid remotely operated vehicle Nereus on May 9, 2014. Early the next day, the vehicle imploded more than six miles below the surface. "Nereus helped us explore places we've never seen before and ask questions we never thought to ask," Shank said in a statement announcing the loss. Afterward, WHOI received an outpouring of condolences, including statements from explorer and filmmaker James Cameron, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Director Margaret Leinen and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Director Charles Elachi.
