Women Making Waves

October 14, 2016

The Society for Women in Marine Science (SWMS) held its annual symposium at WHOI in September, with more than 100 women—and a few men—attending the sold-out free event. Speakers described their research and career paths and spoke frankly about the challenges for women pursuing careers in ocean science, such as implicit gender bias and the lack of policies to help women and men balance the demands of work and family life. The SWMS steering committee includes (left to right), Gabi Serrato Marks, Chrissy Hernandez, Ellie Bors, Annie Bourbonnais, Sophie Chu, and Femke De Jong (not pictured). All are MIT-WHOI Joint Program students, except for Bourbonnais, a postdoctoral fellow at WHOI, and De Jong, a research scientist in physical oceanography at Duke University.
