What’s There?

For decades, one of the driving forces behind much of WHOI’s success in exploring the ocean has been the close association between its scientists and engineers. Here, research engineer Mike Jakuba (left) and deep-sea biologist Tim Shank plan an autonomous dive by the Nereid Under Ice (NUI) vehicle during a recent cruise aboard the research vessel Neil Armstrong. Although designed as a trip to test the new ship’s scientific capabilities, Shank and his team were able to gather samples and data from previously unexplored regions of canyons in the continental shelf just 100 miles south of Woods Hole.
