A curious Adélie penguin checks out a modified commercial quadcopter drone that researchers used along with estimations from ground counts to complete the first census of the species in the Danger Islands, a chain of remote, rocky islands off of the Antarctic Peninsula’s northern tip. The research team led by WHOI seabird ecologist Stephanie Jenouvrier found that the islands have 751,527 pairs of Adélie penguins—more than the rest of the entire Antarctic Peninsula region combined.
