Test Drive

February 9, 2015

On a calm, cold afternoon in January, a team from the Oceanographic Systems Lab at WHOI took a REMUS 6000 autonomous underwater vehicle for a test run in Woods Hole Harbor with R/V Knorr as a backdrop. The vehicle is the largest of the REMUS class and is capable of diving to 6,000 meters (19,700 feet) depth. It was designed under a cooperative program involving the Naval Oceanographic Office, the Office of Naval Research, and WHOI and has been used to locate the wreckage of Air France flight 447 and to survey the wreck site of RMS Titanic.(Photo courtesy of Peter Traykovski, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
