In the 1950s, WHOI biologist Bill Schroeder chartered the Captain Bill II so he could collect and study fish off the Northeast Coast. Here, Schroeder displays a deep-sea fish called chimaera. Schroeder, along with WHOI founder and first director Henry Bigelow, revised and published the 577-page Fishes of the Gulf of Maine in 1953, followed the next year by the similarly weighty Fishes of the Western North Atlantic: Sawfishes, Guitarfishes, Skates, and Rays. Schroeder also discovered a deep-sea lobster population that was being exploited by the mid-1950s.(Photo courtesy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
