Sunset Deployment
August 17, 2017With sun setting in the North Atlantic, WHOI technicians pay out a mooring from the fantail of the research vessel Neil Armstrong. The mooring is part of the Pioneer Array, a network of moorings and autonomous robotic vehicles that are taking continuous measurements of ocean conditions in the waters of the continental shelf and slope south of New England. This shelfbreak region, as it is called, is an area where nutrients concentrate and marine life aggregate. The Pioneer Array is part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative funded by the National Science Foundation. (Photo by Ellen Roosen, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
