Summer Visitor

Summer Visitor

September 26, 2014

Like many on Cape Cod, WHOI has its share of summer visitors. This August, the Institution played host to the newly built ice-capabale research vessel Sikuliaq. The NSF-funded ship was on its way from the Wisconsin ship yard where it was built to its eventual home port of Seward, Alaska. While here, WHOI technicians helped service the ship and loaded equipment for its science verification cruises. Once in Alaska, it will be operated by the University of Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Science as the only ship in the academic fleet capable of carrying researchers to through sea ice up to 2.5 feet thick to study Earth’s fast-changing polar regions.
