Student Out of Water

May 16, 2017

Alexandra Labella, an undergraduate student at Northeastern University, analyzes a sediment core sample in the lab of WHOI scientist Jeff Donnelly. Labella is one of many students who work at WHOI for short-term appointments through the Guest Student program, which allows undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research in an area of interest—in Labella’s case, environmental science—while also immersing themselves in oceanographic research through WHOI’s multitude of lectures and events. Under Donnelly’s supervision, Labella analyzes samples from sediment cores to identify records of past hurricanes and determine how storms will impact coastal ecosystems in the future.
