Nereus in the Challenger Deep

Nereus was a hybrid remotely operated vehicle (HROV) developed by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and one of the few submersibles to ever reach the bottom of the Challenger Deep, the deepest known point in the ocean.

During its 2009 dive to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench (at nearly 11,000 meters / 36,000 feet), Nereus successfully collected sediment and biological samples.
