In WHOI’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFD), scientists study small versions of ocean currents, eddies, and flows. Scientist Claudia Cenedese and graduate students in the Physical Oceanography Department held public open-houses in the GFD to highlight this research. Here, Anna Wargula (blue shirt), a student in the  MIT-WHOI Joint Program, explains a tank demonstration of densities, turbulence, and mixing to WHOI librarian and archivist Ellen Levy and others. Battery-operated fish swimming from layers of less-dense clear water to denser green water created visible eddies, mixing the layers.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
