WHOI engineer Amy Kukulya (left) and scientists Andone Lavery and Tim Stanton recovered a REMUS 100 “KelpBot” autonomous underwater vehicle they deployed with colleagues from the University of New England recently to survey a kelp farm in Saco Bay, Maine. The team, plus more scientists and engineers at WHOI, are engaged in a Department of Energy-funded project to develop and test kelp feed stock and autonomous monitoring systems to help advance the development of kelp aquaculture for biofuels and bio-based chemicals.
