The crew of the research vessel Knorr recovers a “elevator” during a 2001 cruise in the Dive and Discover series. Seafloor explorers use the system in tandem with the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason or the submersible Alvin, piling extra samples and equipment on the elevator that are too bulky or too much for the vehicles to carry to the surface themselves. The yellow floats help the equipment rise to the surface.
