Embarking on a New Voyage

New graduate students from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography gather on the rear deck of the Corwith Cramer, an educational sailing ship operated by the Sea Education Association. Every summer, new MIT/WHOI students embark on a ten-day initiation to life and work at sea. Students get a hands-on course in sea-going skills such as how to handle rigging and how to navigate by the stars and fundamental ocean sampling techniques towing plankton nets, pulling sediment cores, lowering conductivity-temperature-depth
samplers and current meters. (Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
