Distant Rumblings

Distant Rumblings

September 4, 2015

Recent seismic activity along the Cascadia Subduction Zone has renewed attention on the hazard it poses to residents from Vancouver to Portland. The Ocean Bottom Seismograph Instrument Pool which includes researchers from WHOI, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, are finishing a four-year effort known as the Cascadia Initiative Expedition Team to collect seafloor seismic data along the fault from Northern California to Canada. Here, a WHOI team of Tim Kane, Dan Kot, and Dara Tebo (left to right) deploy one of the group’s ocean-bottom seismometers from R/V Oceanus. (Photo courtesy of Dr. Aubreya Adams, Colgate University)
