Diagram demonstrating how a Slocum glider operates in the water column
An ocean glider has no propeller and moves up and down in the water by changing its buoyancy. A glider cannot receive or transmit data under water. It has to surface to get a GPS reading on its position and to exchange data with scientists back on shore. (Illustration by Eric S. Taylor, © Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
