Former MIT-WHOI Joint Program student Santiago Herrera collects tissue samples from a shrimp, one of many crustacean species collected during this May 2014 cruise to explore the Kermadec Trench near New Zealand. Led by WHOI biologist Tim Shank, the expedition was part of the NSF-funded HADES project, a collaborative effort to investigate deep-sea trenches, little-known ocean realms more than 6,000 meters (3.7 miles) beneath the surface.
