David Owen adjusted an early 70mm deep sea camera in the summer of 1959 aboard the sailing ketch R/V Atlantis, WHOI’s original research vessel built solely for marine science. Owen came to WHOI in 1946 and became interested in the new field of deep-sea photograpy. Later, Owen became WHOI’s first Diving Safety Officer, and trained and oversaw WHOI’s scientific divers through the 1970s.(Photo courtesy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
