A Gobbling Deep-Sea Vehicle

November 22, 2018

WHOI engineer Justin Fujii had a bit of fun in 2016, dressing up the deep-sea robot Sentry with electrical tape to celebrate a Thanksgiving conducting research at sea. Sentry is an autonomous underwater vehicle that can dive to 6,000 meters and spend up to 60 hours under water. Equipped with sonar and sensor systems, it has helped scientists map the seafloor, track the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, locate the sunken El Faro cargo ship, and carry out many other missions to explore our ocean. It completed its 500th dive on Oct. 16, 2018, off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Happy Thanksgiving! (Photo courtesy of Dana Yoerger, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
