30 years later, traces of an oil spill persist

February 26, 2020

In 2018, researchers from WHOI and their collaborators from Haverford College collected oil samples from the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill deposited on the shores of McClure Bay in Prince William Sound, Alaska. During this field work, they also searched for oil spilled from ruptured tanks during the 1964 Alaskan earthquake. Oil samples were collected and analyzed to confirm source and chemical composition (Photo by Anna Michel, © Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
