Virgin Islands Research

December 12, 2018

Laura Weber, a graduate student in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, teaches middle and high school students of the U.S. Virgin Islands about the role of microorganisms in the health and ecology of marine animals. Weber is part of the Coral Chorus team, led by WHOI scientists Aran Mooney, Amy Apprill, and Joel Llopiz. The scientists resided at the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, during the summer of 2017. The station routinely housed local students, who visited and interacted with the scientists. The station was destroyed by two Category-5 hurricanes in 2017, Irma and Maria, and is still awaiting funding and resources to be rebuilt.
