Underwater Wonders

June 5, 2018

Researchers at WHOI spend their time trying to understand the ocean—the physics of its currents, the chemistry of its water and sediments, the geology of its seafloor, and the biology of the organisms that live in its depths. But our scientists are also drawn to the beauty and wonder of the incredible environment they study. Biological oceanographer Stace Beaulieu used a microscope to take this photograph of the delicate, necklace-like egg case of a marine snail on a rock collected from the human-occupied submersible Alvin, on a 2,500-meter (8,200-foot) dive in the East Pacific Ocean south of Mexico.
