Patience Rewarded

February 1, 2012

On November 7, 2011, WHOI biologist Peter Wiebe was on board the National Science Foundation research vessel Laurence M. Gould as the ship approached the dock at the Palmer Station Antarctic research facility. High winds and driving sleet forced the ship to wait in pack ice west of the station for conditions to improve before finally tying up. The ship and its science crew were on a 31-day mission (pdf) to study salps and other zooplankton in the ocean off the coast of the West Antarctic Peninsula.(Photo by Peter Wiebe, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
