Over the Bounding Main

February 22, 2018

In blustery weather, technicians and scientists aboard the research vessel Endeavor recover an instrument called a CTD from waters south of Cape Cod in February 2018. The cruise was part of the new Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) project, which supports ongoing decades-long study of a productive ecosystem that supports everything from microscopic organisms at the bottom of the food chain to sharks, turtles, whales, and commercial fisheries at the top. Despite the challenges of studying the area in winter, it is important to collect data and conduct experiments in this lesser-studied season. The CTD measures water temperatures and salinity at various depths. (Photo by Jacob Strock, University of Rhode Island)
