On the Hill

September 14, 2013

Explorer and director James Cameron testified in support of ocean research with WHOI president and director Susan K. Avery before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard in June 2013. Cameron shared his story of working with a team of privately funded engineers to design and build the only human-occupied vehicle currently capable of reaching the deepest reaches of the ocean and piloting that vehicle, the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, to the Challenger Deep. “I think of it as a dark continent still unexplored,” he said. He also spoke about the importance of inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math, so they will continue to lead us into the new Age of Exploration.(Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
