Oh, Brothers!

Thompson, Expedition Leader Tito Collasius pilots the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason as engineer Korey Verhein (center) and microbiologist Anna-Louise Reysenbach (right) observe. Scientists on this 2018 cruise used Jason to study the Brothers volcano, a unique underwater caldera north of New Zealand. Over the course of three weeks, the team filmed, sampled, and and mapped hydrothermal vents at the volcano site, which are some of the world’s most extreme environments, yet home to dozens of species of animals and bacteria.
