Ocean in a Tank

Ocean in a Tank

December 20, 2012

Over the summer, construction crews on WHOI’s Quissett campus finished a flow-through seawater mesocosm, which allows scientists to conduct controlled experiments under realistic light and weather conditions. Filtered water from Martha’s Vineyard Sound passes continuously through seawater lines to the 12 experimental tanks. The mesocosm system can be open to the elements, or enclosed with translucent sheeting, depending on the experiment and season. The system also contains ethernet ports and a server that allow for continuous data collection and monitoring and was designed by Amanda Spivak in WHOI’s Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
