Listening to Bongos

December 15, 2014

WHOI biologist Carin Ashjian enjoys a sunny moment on deck of the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy with her bongo nets. During the Arctic Spring expedition to the Chukchi Sea this past spring, Ashjian used the nets to sample different sizes of zooplankton. These tiny creatures are carried by ocean currents and eat microscopic plants. As the climate changes, shifts in the currents and plant distributions can impact zooplankton, and all life in the Arctic Ocean.(Photo by Amanda Kowalski, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
