Grumpy Grouper

Grumpy Grouper

January 28, 2012

Despite its expression of perpetual disgust, this jewel grouper (Cephalopholis miniata), also known as coral cod or vermillion seabass, enjoys balmy waters and rich feeding grounds in the clear water around coral reefs in the tropics. The fish was photographed by WHOI biologist Simon Thorrold in the Red Sea, where he and other members of the Fish Ecology Laboratory are collaborating with scientists from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) on studies of the critical importance of healthy coral reefs for many species of fish.(Photo by Simon Thorrold, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, based on work supported by Award Nos. USA 00002 and KSA 00011 made by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST))
