First Time Out

November 4, 2018

Postdoctoral investigator Eyal Wurgaft, research assistant Kate Morkeski, and MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate student Mallory Ringham (left to right) lower the new Channelized Optical System (CHANOS II) instrument into Eel Pond in Woods Hole, Mass. for its first test outside of the lab. CHANOS II is designed to take very precise measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon and acidity (pH), two important factors in the global carbon cycle that helps to regulate Earth’s climate. WHOI marine chemist Aleck Wang and his research team designed the instrument. Ringham plans to deploy it in the Red Sea and on deep-sea coral reefs off of Florida to study the coastal carbon cycle and ocean acidification as part of her doctoral dissertation.
