Buoy Overboard

Buoy Overboard

October 8, 2015

A surface buoy is prepared for deployment from the R/V Knorr. The buoy contains communications equipment and serves as flotation for a Coastal Surface Mooring in the Pioneer Array. The Array is part of the NSF-funded Ocean Observatory Initiative (OOI), a network of moorings and autonomous underwater vehicles that will provide scientists with meteorological and oceanographic data over the continental shelf and shelf slope south of New England. This data will enable scientists to examine important coastal processes in near real-time.(Photo courtesy of Al Plueddemann, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
