In the fall of 2014, undergraduate science students watched live video and data from the Caribbean in the University of Rhode Island’s Inner Space Center during an expedition investigating deep-sea release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The students were participating in the TREET project (Transforming Remotely-conducted Research through Ethnography, Education, and rapidly evolving Technologies). Led by WHOI geochemist Chris German, TREET blended three types of research: oceanographic; educational; and ethnographic—analyzing the evolving culture and practices of digital, remote scientific inquiry.
