How a biofilm forms in the sea

Biofilms form when bacteria settle on hard surfaces, secrete slime, and grow into colonies. Some bacteria detach or are eaten by zooplankton, while large organisms can attach if biofilms become thick. (Illustration by Jack Cook, © Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
