Workers at Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding in Somerset, Mass., assemble the aluminum hull of the 60-foot coastal research vessel Tioga in the summer of 2003. The aluminum “longitudinals” in the frame are light–allowing the vessel to travel at high speed–yet strong enough to allow it to carry heavy scientific equipment or to maneuver in heavy seas. The WHOI-owned Tioga was put into the service of science four years ago this spring. (Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
