Antarctic sojourner

After spending 12 hours on the ice, at a distance of more than 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from their ship the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer, engineers have installed the first Ice-Tethered Profiler (ITP) in Antarctica, and with the Antarctic sun low in the sky, begin cleaning up the site. WHOI engineer Scott Worrilow (center, leaning over winch) installed the ITP with help from members of the ship’s crew, part of research by scientists at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
