The research vessel Atlantis at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) dock in 1959 along with the Calypso — a former British Royal Navy Minesweeper converted into a research vessel for oceanography researcher Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Atlantis was the first WHOI research vessel and the first ship built specifically for interdisciplinary research in marine biology, marine geology and physical oceanography.
