Antarctic Adventure

A research team from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) hikes along a lava ridge in Antarctica during an expedition to study how the volcanic landscape formed and has changed. From left, marine chemist Mark Kurz leads the group toward a site where they will collect samples; MIT/WHOI Joint Program student Andrea Burke has her rock hammer ready; science writer Hugh Powell takes notes for the Polar Discovery website; and geologist Adam Soule has just taken a picture of the patterned ground beneath their feet.
