A New View of Marine Life

A New View of Marine Life

March 14, 2011

Nick Loomis, a graduate student in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program, grew up in the farmlands of Nebraska, far from any ocean. As a result, he had little exposure to the tiny plants and animals, collectively called plankton, that dwell in the sea. Once at MIT and WHOI, however, he helped invent a new sea-going imaging instrument called the Holocam, which can capture 3-D holographic images of algae, copepods, and other microscopic ocean life. Learn more about his work in a special audio slideshow.(Photo by Daniel Cojanu)
