Night Launch for Sentry
March 24, 2011In December 2010, the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry, was in the Gulf of Mexico helping investigate possible impacts from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The cruise marked the first time Sentry and the deep submersible Alvin worked in tandem on a scientific mission. During the cruise, Sentry would typically launch after dark and map the ocean floor during the night so that scientists could revise their dive plans for Alvin the next day.
