Midnight camp

Sunny yellow tents on stark lava and snow mark a temporary home for a WHOI research team in Antarctica to study the weathering of ancient lava flows from a long-dormant volcano, Mt. Morning. The trip, a Polar Discovery online expedition, took place in December 2007—Antarctic summer—which provided the group 24-hour daylight for working. WHOI geologist Mark Kurz led the small band, including geologist Adam Soule, Joint Program Student Andrea Burke, photographer Chris Linder, and writer Hugh Powell.(Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
