Not Always Smooth Sailing

Not Always Smooth Sailing

April 17, 2011

Georges Bank near Cape Cod is well known for it’s fish and its rough seas. In 2010 biologists Peter Wiebe and Gareth Lawson took a research team to Georges Bank to study krill and the predators that eat them. “We only ended up having one calm day out of seven,” Lawson blogged during the cruise. Here, seven people work on a wet deck in pitching seas to recover a heavy instrument swinging on the R/V Endeavor‘s  A-frame. The instrument, a Video Plankton Recorder attached to a CTD rosette, takes images of plankton underwater, to estimate population.
